This powerful national network reaches 30,000 beauty salon owners and operators, working in 8,000 salons, whose combined customer base is 2.25 million African-American and Hispanic women. Through these beauty professionals, SMSi distributes manufacturers' free product samples, coupons, and other promotional materials.

The samples are hand-delivered to clients by a professional beauty expert — whose expertise and opinion they value, their cosmetologist, esthetician, stylist, nail technician, braider, or spa operators. The sample product receives the added value of "an implied endorsement" from the expert.

African-American women tend to spend 2 to 4 hours in the beauty salon per visit — compared to 1 to 2 hours for the general-market patron. The salon becomes a reading center and locus of shoptalk among patrons and operators. Product samples and promotional information benefit from this atmosphere and have impact when they come from a beauty professional the client knows and trusts.

The strong relationship between beauty professional and client translates to a great opportunity for effective in-salon marketing activity–sampling and POS placement.
